Independent Escorts: How to work safely?

Safety and personal protection are among the most important aspects for escort-girls and escort-boys, whether they are new to the industry or have already gained experience as escorts but wish to, for example, do tours (travel within a country or abroad while working as an escort). The greatest fear for any sex worker is putting themselves in danger while selling their services. This point is so significant that it quickly discourages those who want to get started. As a result, they tend to turn to established establishments such as erotic studios or escort agencies because these structures seem to offer a greater sense of security. Indeed, the fear of endangering one's life tends to overshadow the idea of becoming an independent escort (a status that is challenging but generally more lucrative than working in an erotic studio, for example). In reality, it is possible to limit your exposure to danger when you choose to become a sex worker. By making well-informed choices and taking careful consideration in advance, it is possible to minimize the risk.

In this article, I share five accessible and easy-to-implement tips that you can use to make your independent escort work a safer job. While my examples are primarily focused on Switzerland (as it's the market I know best), these tips are applicable to all independent escorts, regardless of their location in the world.

1. Choose the right country

As you probably already know, prostitution is not legal everywhere in the world. In some countries, it is completely prohibited, although it still exists (United States, the Middle East, the Balkan countries, etc.). In others, it is tolerated but unregulated (Italy, United Kingdom, Finland, Estonia, Poland, Spain, Portugal, etc.). Elsewhere, it is legal but abolitionist (France, Sweden, Ireland, Iceland, etc.), while in other territories, prostitution is legal and highly regulated (Germany, Netherlands, Switzerland, Austria, Greece, Hungary, etc.). The key thing to keep in mind is that the more a country's ideology is against prostitution, the more dangerous it is likely to be. Over the years, peer-reviewed research and comprehensive analyses have repeatedly demonstrated that the criminalization or severe restriction of prostitution is associated with increased risks and harms for sex workers (assault, rape, theft, exclusion, marginalization, disease, etc.). These studies come from public health, human rights, and epidemiological research, not just isolated opinions. For example, a major international systematic review (covering 33 countries between 1990 and 2018) concluded that the criminalization of sex work is linked to significant harms: https://www.bmj.com/content/364/bmj.l343.abstract.

Therefore, your first priority for your safety as an independent escort is to do your research and choose countries that have a policy of decriminalizing this profession.

2. Choose how you want to work

It's important to understand that a woman working on the street and a woman working in a private apartment are not exposed to the same risks. This is why not all sex workers practice this profession in the same way (I encourage you to read the following articles: "Difference between a prostitute and an escort" and "Difference between an escort and a courtesan"). The rule is quite simple to understand: the lower your rates, the less sophisticated you are, the less importance you place on your service and the location where you receive clients, and the less you filter your clients (therefore the more you see), the more you expose yourself to violence. The higher your rates, the more sophisticated you are, the more importance you place on your service and the location where you receive clients, the more selective you are about who you see (meaning you see fewer clients but better clients, and only privately and by appointment), and the less you expose yourself to violence. For a client, the less value you have in their eyes, the more disrespect they will show you. Therefore, how you present yourself to them as an independent escort will directly impact their perception of you, which will automatically influence their attitude towards you.

3. Filter clients who want to meet you

In some countries (especially those where prostitution is illegal), this filtering method is very thorough and practically essential for anyone wishing to work as an independent escort. In other countries, such as Switzerland, this practice is less common, or even discouraged. It will therefore be very difficult for you to obtain a potential client's ID or LinkedIn profile because they won't give it to you. They believe they too have a right to privacy, and they too don't want to be victims of harassment or doxxing. It is therefore very difficult in Switzerland (and in many other European countries) to filter clients as it is very common in the United States. However, you can still increase your chances of meeting good clients by doing the following these three tips:

- Be strategic and carefully choose your advertising sites. Keep in mind that there are sites (even if they are large and very popular) that will not bring you the desired clientele. For example, many escorts websites in Switzerland are full of fake profiles, have no ethical pricing policy (meaning your profile will often end up next to a girl even prettier than you who charges half as much for the same service), or apply very high advertising prices without guaranteeing you a good clientele. If you're an independent escort, you want to be able to diversify your advertising (but without overdoing it). You can advertise on one of these large sites, but it's crucial that you also have a presence on smaller, more elegant, authentic, and targeted sites dedicated solely to independent escorts. This allows you to more precisely reach the type of clients you want to meet. Why? To give you more visibility and more credibility. The larger an escort site is, the more it will tend to promote "bait-and-switch" profiles, the more you'll be contacted by strange clients and timewasters, and the less chance you'll have of being found by the best clients.

- Unless you work in an erotic studio or for an escort agency in Switzerland, escort websites don't offer the option to screen clients before meeting them. However, small, well-established sites that have built a substantial clientele may have an internal system allowing you to accept bookings securely. Admittedly, these sites are rare, so you need to do your research beforehand.

- Another way to filter clients who contact you is to apply simple principles such as: paying attention to how the client writes to you (if their message is vulgar, you'd rather not see them), always choosing to speak to them on the phone (a person's voice can often reveal a lot about their intentions), the type of service they request (you'll quickly realize if they've read your ad or not), and if they repeatedly reschedule their appointment without apparent justification, you'd rather not see them. If anything (even the smallest thing) makes you uncomfortable about the way someone approaches you, you won't take any risks and will choose to ignore it. All those little things you notice, those small details you observe, will keep you away from clients with bad intentions.

Finally, how you present yourself as an escort (the higher your standards, the more you'll deter people with ill intentions), your working hours (working nights exposes you to greater risks), and how you communicate with potential clients will naturally help you filter them out. The more professional, organized, and confident an escort appears, the less likely she is to attract men who might want to harm her.

4. Implement basic safety measures for each new client

My number one piece of advice is not to answer calls from blocked numbers. This is dangerous for several reasons, which I explain in this article: “Should You Answer hidden Numbers?” So, whether for incalls or outcalls, you don't confirm an appointment with a client whose cell phone number you don't have. Then, you send your exact address no more than one hour before the confirmed appointment (not before). Once you're at the front door, you ask the client to call you when they're there. Only then should you give them your floor and apartment/hotel room number. For home or hotel visits, it's also important to follow some basic safety rules. You'll learn more in this article, “Basic Rules for a Successful Outcall.” For safety and personal protection reasons, when working as an independent escort, it's best to always have at least one trusted person who knows your whereabouts. I understand, however, that this can be difficult for those who wish to keep this activity secret.

5. Protect your identity online

Choosing to protect your identity online is also a way to stay safe in this industry. There are several approaches you can take, which can naturally be combined. First, partially blurring your face is a way to limit the risk of being recognizable online. Second, you'll want to choose platforms that don't perform intrusive identity verification before allowing you to advertise and give you the option to pay for your ads in cash. Of course, these types of platforms are becoming less common, but some still exist. Keep in mind that every online payment leaves a trace: not only is your bank aware of all your transactions, but the person receiving your payment also knows your identity. Finally, the last piece of advice reinforces the previous one: as long as cash is still in circulation, as an independent escort, that’s the only form of payment you should accept from your clients. It's the only payment method that still protects your identity when dealing with men you don't know and may only meet once in your life. The less clients know about your true identity, the better. That's also why having a separate phone number solely dedicated to your escort work is a must in the industry.

Safety as an Independent Escort: Additional tips

Sex work is a risky activity. It becomes even riskier for those who are not well prepared. The desire to earn money should not, however, override the risks involved.

And what should you do if you feel unsafe or threatened as a sex worker? Regarding this question, I can only partially answer it because it depends a lot on where you work as an escort. In countries where sex work is criminalized, your options in case of danger are often minimal or even nonexistent because you are yourself breaking the law. If, on the other hand, you find yourself in danger as a sex worker in Switzerland, know that the vast majority of cantons have a very active vice squad, which you can contact at any time and whose mission includes protecting you. Furthermore, many cantons in Switzerland also have their own sex workers' associations (this is the case in the cantons of Zurich, Fribourg, Geneva, Bern, St. Gallen, Vaud, etc.). These associations work in your best interest and are available to guide you, answer your questions, and protect you if you find yourself in a threatening or dangerous situation. Don't hesitate to contact them.

Finally, I believe that all sex workers should take self-defense classes. When you work in this field, it is paramount to have concrete tools to deal with real risks, to know how to build your confidence and your ability to set boundaries, to learn to prevent rather than fight, and to know how to reduce your feelings of vulnerability when facing an aggressor. In my opinion, self-defense classes are an accessible and essential investment (too often underestimated by escorts) for anyone wanting to be active in sex work and acquire concrete tools to react more effectively to a threat.
